The luxury megayacht AQUA from Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design has been swirling in secrecy and speculation ever since its original concept launch in 2019. Originally attributed to a commission from Bill Gates, these claims seemed to be untrue (though the centibillionaire does allegedly seem to be connected to another hydrogen-powered superyacht concept, Feadship 821). It’s also not currently clear whether AQUA is officially at sea yet: Some reports seem to imply it is, though unavailable for private charter, but even the ship’s official website still seems steeped in computer-generated media more common with concepts than fully actualized realities.
Whether or not this yacht does or will exist, it’s certainly continuing to make waves with its opulence. Advertised as combining cutting-edge technology with the fluid versatility of water, this 112m superyacht is drippingÑliterally and figurativelyÑin liquid-related innovation. With a flowing exterior inspired by ocean swells, including a swim platform and a series of deck platforms cascading down towards the sea, the five-deck set up allows passengers to be close to the water at all times. Internally, the health and wellness center includes a hydro massive room, a panoramic, water-level ocean view from the gym, and reflective, vibrating water features for a soothing spa experience.
Although its striking visual and functional features are certainly compelling, from the planet’s perspective, the most impressive feature of AQUA is its hydrogen-electric propulsion package. This system uses liquified hydrogen to power the engines, propulsion, auxiliary systems, and hotel services while only producing waterÑnot carbon or other harmful emissionsÑas a by-product.
With a capacity for 14 guests and 31 crew members plus the ability to reach 17 knots and travel over 3,700 nautical miles, AQUA has the potential to make quite the splash in the yachting world, but whether this superyacht is an achievable dream or wishful thinking is still up for debate.
