As Vice President of Data Centers at Google since 2008, Joe Kava has been responsible for setting global data center standards not only in design, engineering, construction, operations, safety, and security, but also in sustainability. The recipient of Infrastructure Masons 2019 Sustainability Champion Award, Kava committed Google data centers to power their operations with 100 percent renewable energy in 2012 and achieved this milestone by 2017, three years ahead of the original goal. Since then, Kava has driven the development of over 3500 MW of renewable power, achieved global Grade A PUE and CUE levels, and committed to matching 100 percent carbon-free energy 24/7 by 2023. Passionate about educating not only industry experts, but also the general public about the global data industry and efficiency best practices, Kava also works on the Webby-award-winning podcast “Where the Internet Lives,” which provides insight into how data centers can lead on clean energy.
