SCALING UP DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE How to Build for Hyperscaler and AI Needs

InterGlobix Magazine Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Jasmine Bedi, sat down with Krupal Raval to discuss the hyperscale data center market, the unique features of Equinix’s the xScale product offering, and the strategic considerations driving xScale expansion into new territories. Looking ahead, Raval also explores where AI and shifting needs will take the digital infrastructure industry next.

Can you provide an overview of Equinix’s xScale program and its significance in the hyperscale data center market?

Equinix’s xScale division is a strategic move that stems from our deep-rooted customer focus. While Equinix is already known as a leader in retail colocation and interconnections, we recognized the growing demand for hyperscale data center solutions from our customer base. These customers were already entrusting us with their critical workloads, so it made sense for us to expand into hyperscale offerings to meet their evolving needs.

To make this expansion a reality, we sought out specific equity partners who understood the unique requirements of hyperscale projects. This search wasn’t about simply checking a box; it was about finding partners who shared our long-term vision and commitment to customer satisfaction. Over the past four years, we’ve formed six joint venture partnerships, with GIC being the primary investor alongside others like PGIM (the investment arm of Prudential).

Our focus on hyperscale goes beyond offering more capacity. It’s about tailoring our approach to meet the distinct needs of hyperscale customers—from financing models to product design and construction—which often differ significantly from those of retail customers. By bringing in the right investors and forming these joint ventures, we’ve positioned ourselves to address the growing demand for hyperscale solutions effectively while staying true to our customer-centric ethos.

How does Equinix’s xScale initiative differentiate itself from traditional colocation services, and what benefits does it offer to hyperscale and AI companies?

The Equinix xScale initiative sets itself apart by offering a unique blend of small-scale requirements and high network density within the Equinix ecosystem. This approach means customers can seamlessly transition between their Equinix deployments and hyperscale needs, which simplifies their operational landscape. Through this flexibility, the initiative can cater to a wide spectrum of needs, from single rack setups to multi-megawatt and even multi-building requirements. While many companies claim to offer this range, Equinix stands out with its unparalleled network density at the top end of the spectrum.
